Sir David Attenborough: Hosting a Legend | Broadley Case Study
We were delighted to welcome Sir David Attenborough back to Broadley Studios for a filmed contribution to Our Story with Sir David Attenborough, a new immersive experience at the Natural History Museum. Produced in collaboration with Open Planet Studios, the 50-minute 360° installation opens on Thursday 19 June 2025 in the Jerwood Gallery, one of the spaces of the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. Tickets are available from nhm.ac.uk.
David Attenborough: Broadcasting Legend
Now aged 98, Sir David Attenborough remains a towering figure in broadcasting, with a career that spans over seven decades. He first appeared on our screens in the 1950s with Zoo Quest, before reshaping nature documentaries with Life on Earth in 1979. Through the 1980s and 90s, series like The Living Planet and The Private Life of Plants broke new ground in visual storytelling. In the 2000s, he brought the natural world to new generations with The Blue Planet and Planet Earth, both of which won multiple BAFTAs and Emmys.
In recent years, titles such as A Life on Our Planet and The Green Planet have cemented his role not just as a narrator of nature, but as one of its most passionate advocates. His voice and presence have become part of the way the world understands the planet. So when he steps into a studio, the tone is clear and the standard is high.
Natural History Museum Shoot
The shoot at Broadley focused on capturing key footage for the installation’s visual storytelling, combining green screen and black screen setups to maximise post-production flexibility. Working with Open Planet Studios, we delivered a clean, cinematic look that would seamlessly integrate into a fully immersive environment designed to reflect Sir David’s message of hope, urgency and connection.
Our Story with Sir David Attenborough begins with the origins of Earth over four billion years ago, taking audiences on a journey through the evolution of life, humanity’s rise, and our growing influence on the planet. With powerful 360° projections across walls and floor, the installation blends real-world nature footage, animation and narration by Sir David himself to create an unforgettable experience.
The show highlights key moments from the natural world, including gorillas in their forest habitat and humpback whales gliding through ocean depths, while weaving in Sir David’s reflections on the responsibility we all share for the future.
An Immersive Format
The project is the result of a close collaboration between Open Planet Studios and the Natural History Museum. The Jerwood Gallery was transformed into a purpose-built space for full-surround projection, making this a first-of-its-kind experience at the Museum. According to Jonnie Hughes, Co-Founder of Open Planet Studios, the immersive format allows audiences to be taken anywhere, from the ocean floor to a rainforest clearing, amplifying the emotional power of the story. Read more about the exhibition in the official press release.
