Paul Groom shows how to shoot like a pro

Bristol corporate photographer and videographer, Paul Groom, tells us how he was asked to feature in a 12 page article in PhotoPlus magazine, with him as the featured pro teaching an ‘apprentice’ photographer how to shoot night photography.

“A couple of months ago I received an email from a dedicated Canon photography magazine called PhotoPlus asking me to take part in an article called The Apprentice. The idea is that they organise a professional photographer and also one of their readers to come on a shoot and the pro helps the apprentice to take pro level photos – each month it’s a different subject matter… this time it was night time photography. After a bit of light persuading by my family I said yes to the idea and we had a superb time.

 

I met the magazine editor Pete Travers and the ‘apprentice’ Paul Way in Bristol around sun-down and after some lively chat about camera gear (I could talk about camera for hours, to be honest) we set-up on the top floor of the car park overlooking Harvey Nichols. After we took some tasty evening shots showing vehicle light trails, which involved a lot of waiting for traffic lights to change, we went to the Cabot Circus bridge and then moved onto Castle Park and recreated a photo I’d taken years before (for Cubex) of Castle Bridge (aka Bendy Bridge). We then went across to the water near the Watershed for some more pics.
